You followed a stranger off the path, and now you are lost. Find your way home before the duppies find you.
At every fork there is a light. A peenie wallie pulses and wanders like an insect: follow it, it knows the way home. A stranger is two steady eyes that glide, wait for you and turn to watch you: it leads you deeper in.
Listen too. The church bell, the river, a sound system far off and your own yard's dogs all tell you where you are.
Neats only move when you can't see them. The rolling calf charges along roads and open ground: get off the road. The three-foot horse runs you down in the open: break its line of sight. Running is loud. Bush, tombs, zinc fences and the space under a house are places to hide.
Dusk, on the way home. Everyone has told you never to follow strangers.
Two little lights blinked at you from the bush, and you followed them anyway.
Now they have gone out. It is dark, and you do not know where you are.
Find your way home.
